Advice from Grandma Dorothy

Hello Everyone! Sage the Emotional Support Owl here! Angela has a great Mom, we call her Grandma Dorothy! She's got a really creative mind! She shared some ideas with us for quarantine with kids! Angela and I added some too and here is what we came up with!

1. Routines! Make a daily routine and stick to it!

2. Picnics & Camp outs in the living room! Take a blanket, make a tent, roast pretend hot dogs or pretend to cook real ones or use rolled up bologna! You can even pretend to chop down trees using wrapping paper tubes.

3. Pretend, Pretend, Pretend! Pretend play is great! Only limited by the imagination!

4. Turn household tasks into play or teaching time! Have kids help (dependent on age and ability of course) they can dust, vacuum, match socks, do dishes etc....

5. Yard work. Kids can help! Pick up sticks, rake, sweep.

6. Sidewalk chalk, outdoor games with just your family, fresh air.

7. Scavenger Hunts! Make a list of items for each family member to find. For kids, make sure they have different items so they don't fight over them! Mom and Dad should make lists for each other. You can also do this with tasks like putting things away. Whoever gets done first can pick tonights movie!

8. Journaling, drawing, reading quietly.

9. Story Time! Take turns reading out loud. Have kids read the recepie, read subtitles.

10. Play games, make puzzles, do arts & crafts, make slime etc...

11. Take baths and let the kids stay in a little longer.

12. FOR PARENTS - take turns giving each other a break! For example: Watch the kids while your wife takes an uninterrupted bath. Or watch the kids while your husband plays his video game for an hour. Don't take advantage and take turns! Set a good example!

13. Play eye spy!

14. Write letters to loved ones! Write letters and draw pictures for Grandma and Grandpa!

15. Skype or FaceTime friends and family.

16. Take pets for walks if it's safe in your area. Practice good hygiene and social distancing!

17. Create educational games/opportunities. Kids can help measure things for recepies, read recepies, count things, find shapes, fractions can be learned using measuring cups, cutting up fruit etc... Take virtual field trips! There are many online!

18. Use shaving cream or soap (be careful how much) on a table top or counter to let kids play and draw in. When you wipe the surface down, it's just soap and it's clean!

19. Reorganize closets and rooms, deep clean the house.

20. Ask the kids and family members for their ideas!
